Unintended Acceleration in Toyota Vehicles May Have Caused 89 Deaths

Published by on May 27th, 2010, No Comments

Toyota hasn’t been able to heave a sigh of relief after a flaw was discovered in the acceleration pedals of a number of Toyota models. Toyota first staged a heavy recall to get rid of the sticky gas pedals and thought that it might satiate the complaining NHTSA.

Toyota even paid $16.4 million fine for this mistake of theirs, but despite the ‘corrections,’ matters are only getting worse for the Japanese giant. NHTSA that reported 52 casualties because of the sticky gas pedals is now investigating 71 more crashes that led to fatalities. NHTSA has been notified of a total of 6,200 cases with 2,600 reports filed since March this year.

Out of these 2,600 cases, 100 consumers reported the problem after Toyota claimed to have rectified it.

Toyota might be the highest automobile manufacturing brand in the world but even then it needs to fill the void in the compact roadster segment. Instead of raising or developing a new platform altogether, Toyota is thinking on the lines of manufacturing a less-expensive version of the FT-86 sports car. The touted model will be a rear-wheel driven commuter with a front-mounted engine. It will be powered by Toyota’s very own 3SZ-VE engine which is a 1.5 liter 4-banger with 109 bhp power output. The current FT-86 sports car which has been developed together by Subaru and Toyota is expected to go on sale soon.

Toyota Hybrid X Concept 6

Toyota may be a tad on the low side after its relentless string of technical issues which has seen so many Toyota commuters being recalled, but the Prius has been one ray of hope that has never let the moniker down. Toyota is now thinking of further embarking upon the Prius success and the news is that a Prius Minivan may be released in 201. The Prius derivative will come with three rows of seats that will help the commuter accommodate a maximum of seven passengers. What is great is that it will again be a green commuter that will be based on the Li-on battery technology. This will help to improve fuel economy and the excess weight will also not be an issue.

It was on a California freeway that a man managed to escape any sort of injury when his Toyota Prius went out of control because of unintended acceleration and a day later, a 56-year old woman faced the same consequence in Harrison, New York.

The woman was driving her 2005 Prius model and she sustained injuries as she was pulling out of the driveway when the Prius shot across the street and crashed into a stone wall. It wasn’t a case where the floor mat got stuck and the reason of the crash is a faulty accelerator pad which has the tendency to get stuck on occasions. The Prius in question had already been taken to a dealership after a company recall before this crash. For now Toyota is answering questions to convince the bothered US authorities who are pushing Toyota for another recall.

The technical flaw is now being investigated by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Toyota Motor Corporation engineers.
