Tesla’s electric sedan, the famed Model S, has been hailed by many as “the safest car on Earth”. While some of that statement might be true, there seems to be one, little factor that is a throne in Tesla’s safe side. And it’s quite a big one – fire.

Over the past few months, Tesla has been plagued with complaints of it’s model S catching fire when it is in a crash or comes into contact with road debris.

This happens when the underbody of the car, which carries the battery pack, is punctured. While there have been 3 reported incidents of a Tesla Model S catching fire, luckily none of the passengers in these cars were injured. (more…)

If it wasn’t for the spicy price tag, the new Tesla Model S would be a hot seller. Announed just a couple of months ago, the electric supercar is rumored to have at least 1,000 orders in queue. A 5+2 sedan (yes, 7 people, exactly), this electric vehicle is capable of jumping from 0 to 60mph in only 5.6 seconds and can go for a 300 miles distance if on a full charge. For the moment, Tesla Model S can be ordered for a (refundable) reservation fee of $5,000 while the total amount (including the $7,500 federal tax credit for fully electrical vehicles) goes to a good $49,900. I’m sure we’d look good behind the wheel for such an amazing ride …

Tesla Model S Announced

Electric seems to be the way forward with cars and Tesla has just announced that it will start production of their Tesla Model S by the third quarter of 2011. That is great news for auto enthusiasts who would prefer practicality and efficiency over sheer power and pace as the Model S is equipped with a battery pack made up of 8,000 cells, giving it a range of about 300 miles, top speed of 120 mph and 0-60 acceleration in 5.6 seconds. The car has plenty of room for people and for storage with the batteries housed on the floor and it can comfortably accommodate five adults and a couple of kids. With a drag coefficient of just 0.27 and weighing just 1735 Kg, Tesla has tried hard to increase its efficiency with better design and lighter frame. Set to be priced at $49,900, this is a great buy in any way you look at it! [via ]
