Land Rover LRX Compact SUV Ushers a New Era for the Brand

Published on May 13th, 2010, No Comments

We are so accustomed to talk about Land Rovers as typical all-wheel driven commuters that a Land Rover running on a front-wheel drivetrain sounds like a real novelty. It has never happened before for the brand but under the new owner, we will soon see an LRX Compact SUV coupe which is slated to debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.

Hitting the production floor early next year, Land Rover will first unveil an AWD version of the LRX while the novelty (FWD) shall hit markets sometime later. Land Rover is keen to reduce fleet CO2 emissions and the front-wheel driven LRX will look to do that for the brand. As far as the AWD version is concerned, it will get a 185 bhp rendering 2.2 liter diesel engine which will be mated to a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

Land Rover LRX is the next big thing as far as expanding the Land Rover lineage goes and the LRX has already started gaining popularity with its winter testing spy shots from the Scandinavia surfacing on the web. The heavily clad LRX mule reveals a shortened wheelbase compared to the LR2 which is why the rear end has been shortened.

The mule cased in an LR2 shell reveals nothing more but it is already known that the LRX category will help define a new segment for Land Rover. Some of the signature Range Rover design elements such as the clamshell bonnet and the floating roof will also grace the LRX model as per the company sources. The production ready model of the car will arrive later this year and the engine choice most likely will include a 2.2L turbodiesel capable of producing 160hp at 400Nm of torque and a 3.2L inline six petrol option that will hit the 230hp mark at 317Nm of torque. Land Rover LRX Concept in Geneva

Land Rover LRX Concept

The floor in Geneva is filled with beauties. Land Rover LRX Concept is the company’s newest “improved version” that has some exceptional specs. First of all the 2.0L turbo diesel engine that does 60mpg (or 4.7 liters for every 100km) with CO2 emission levels at 120g/km.

Another thing that got my attention is the Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) technology that would allow LRX to use electric drive alone at lower speeds while retaining full (even improved) sport utility ability in tough conditions. The looks are great as you can probably see. The top roof and the underbody are made of lightweight materials which not only makes it lighter but also safer.

This is still a concept but showing it in Geneva could mean that with such specs it should go into production sooner than we think. The black it has in the pictures, is so handsome.
