Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder

As many “petrolheads” would know, one of the most exciting realms of the motoring world is that of exotics. Thorough-bred sports cars are a good subject on which to spend a weekend afternoon – at least, for those amongst us devoted enough to the boundless thrills of touching, viewing and indeed, driving these beasts. With that in mind, our staffer, known to readers as SLD, spent last Saturday afternoon visiting Cape Town’s exotics dealerships.

The car shown above is the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, and the picture was taken at Bloomsbury. (more…)

Mercedes SL AMG spy shots

The next Mercedes SL-Class looks to have some big changes on the way. In addition to a radically redesigned front-end — comprised of a big ol’ new grille and CLS-style boomerang headlights–the new SL’s AMG package will get what the folks at KGP are calling the “increasingly prolific” 6.2-liter V8 engine. The engine, when packaged with Mercedes’ 7G-TRONIC seven-speed transmission, generates 465 lb-ft. or torque and 525-horsepower in the S63 AMG and in the C63 AMG, the same set-up provides 457-hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. The KGP spy shooters expect the new AMG “Sport Leicht” to be endowed with power ratings closer to the S-class, although their sources report “packaging restrictions” might limit those power numbers a wee bit.

BMW to expand the X-model range with X4

Published by on Aug 12th, 2007, No Comments

It is not a secret anymore – BMW is in the middle of developing a 4×4 Coupe named X 6 based on its big off roader X 5.

Now here is another prototype mule suggesting what is up next. Since BMW has been very successful with the current X model line- up consisting of X 5 and X 3, it is very likely that now the smaller 4×4 model X 3 could become the base for another crossover coupe, the X 4.

As can be seen on the photos, the test car is an X 3 but is longer and wider, and it runs on sporty wheels. For the time being nothing has leaked through about the styling , but it can be expected that this model will bear some resemblance to the upcoming X 6.

While the next generation X 3 is scheduled for release in 2010, a matching SUV Coupe X 4 could be due at about the same time.

Lightweight Caparo-T1 dethrones Bugatti

Caparo T1

The Bugatti Veyron’s reign as fastest accelerating supercar seems to have met its fate. The soon-to-be world’s fastest accelerating car has broken cover during the final stages of test and development. The Caparo T1 is a high performance two-seater sports car with highly resolved aerodynamics, which has been designed with the looks and performance of a Formula One race car. The T1’s 500 kg weight and 550 bhp give it a power-to-weight ratio of 1100 bhp/tonne – better than any current supersport motorcycle and approaching that of a genuine F1 car. (more…)

Another Bentley coupe for oil magnates

Bentley Brooklands

In a show of unwavering commitment to the emulation of its own performance and luxury coach building history, Bentley Motorcars has released the Brooklands, a new coupe that picks up where the Continental R left off. That means more prestige, more technology and more power. It delivers all of that in spades: Interior decor includes leather-ensconced foot wells, and the twin-turbo V-8 makes a thunderous 530 horsepower, the highest output of any Bentley to date. (more…)

Golf 6 draws closer

VW Golf 6

As according to VWs plans, development of the next generation Golf is well underway. The Golf VI is being developed to be cheaper to build than the current Golf V, which has had VW management lamenting many ills: the electronics are too complicated and require highly qualified personnel, increasing training costs. The doors and the multilink rear suspension also require complex assembly techniques, leading to production times almost double those of rivals which leads to high production costs. The result is a car which in 2004 generated €900 million less than expected, one of a myriad reasons why VW has considered a replacement much earlier than originally planned. (more…)

Plastic rims becoming a reality

Published by on Jul 10th, 2007, 1 Comment

Weight saving is becoming a very crucial factor for today’s performance cars. Just as manufacturers are trying to squeeze out that extra kilowatt, at the same time they are also trying to shed that extra kilogram. It is quite common for super cars to use carbon fibre body panels to reduce weight and this has been slowly making its way to normal road cars such as the new 2008 BMW M3 which will have a carbon fibre roof. Even AMG boasts using 19 inch alloy rims for their Black Series CLK63 that just barely weighs 11kg each, which is about 3kg lighter than the CLK63’s standard wheels. (more…)
